Lead Bluegrass Mandolin Beyond the First Fiddle Tune
Instructor: Tony Watt
Starts Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:30 in N. Cambridge
Level: Beginner/Intermediate

This course will meet every other Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 pm, starting on March 2nd. The course consists five 90 minute sessions on Mar. 2nd, 16th & 30th, and Apr. 13th & 27th. The cost is $125 for BBU members,
$135 for non-members, which includes a BBU membership. Classes will be held in Cambridge, MA 02140 near where Rt. 2 hits Cambridge at the Alewife T Station. There is plenty of permit-free, meter-free street parking, and it is also a 10 minute walk from the Alewife T Station.

The class is intended for those who have just started playing lead on the mandolin, or who have been frustrated trying to progress beyond a handful of tunes. Most of the students in the class will already know how to pick Old Joe Clark, but you can participate even if you don't know the tune. In this course we'll learn how to read and learn from tablature (tab), how to play fiddle tunes and take breaks on vocal tunes, and how to improvise. The primary focus will be on developing fundamental lead mandolin skills, as well as helping students improve their practice and self-directed learning.

To take full advantage of this course, students should already be able to play at least one fiddle tune. You don't need to know how to read music, but you should have some ability to play basic bluegrass rhythm. Students should bring a playable mandolin, a pick, and a three ring binder and pen (handouts will be provided). Enrollment is limited so please e-mail me as soon as possible at tonywatt@gmail.com if you are interested or have any questions.
