Songwriter-based acoustic string band from New York City, Cricket Tell the Weather, will be bringing their original, independent folk and bluegrass roots to the Harvard Public Library on Saturday, January 23rd, 2016 at 7:30pm. Brooklyn based Cricket Tell the Weather, a folk roots project of fiddler/singer/songwriter Andrea Asprelli, showcases award-winning original songs delivered with honest vocals and supported by some of NYC’s finest acoustic musicians. Winners of the 2013 FreshGrass Award, Cricket has toured throughout the Northeast US since releasing their self-titled debut album last year. Cricket’s second album, composed of original, contemporary songs with an independent bluegrass and old-time aesthetic, is due out this summer. Front-woman Andrea Asprelli came to the east coast from Colorado’s front range. A classical musician from an early age, she was introduced to folk and traditional music while studying in Canterbury, England. She came back to the states to find a lush community of folk and bluegrass musicians, and found many homes within them throughout New York and New England that supported and nurtured her as a songwriter, vocalist, and fiddler. In 2011, she won the Podunk Bluegrass Songwriting Competition for her co-written song “Remington,” the opening track of Cricket’s debut album. An evening of unheard lyrics from America’s great folk poet, Woody Guthrie, with music by the most awarded artist in the history of bluegrass. As a mandolinist, singer, and composer, David Grisman is a great pioneer of jamgrass. After founding a band in 1973 called Old and in the Way with close friend Jerry Garcia (who gave him the nickname “Dawg”), Grisman created the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience and hit the road for forty years. With influences ranging from hot jazz to classic rock and even old-world Mediterranean folk, Grisman come to the Chevalier Theatre, this time with his hard-hitting sextet.  The Sextet includes Jim Kerwin (bass), Matt Eakle (flute and bass flute), George Marsh (drums and percussion), Chad Manning (violin, viola and mandolin) and George Cole (guitar).
