Darol Anger And The Furies Park Avenue Congregational Church 50 Paul Revere Road Arlington Saturday, April 25, 8pm See https://www.facebook.com/events/800019150047768/ for complete info and tickets. Darol Anger (5-string fiddle and mandocello) | Emy Phelps (guitar and vocals) | Jenna Moynihan (fiddle) | Mairi Chaimbeul (harp and vocals) | Aidan O'Donnell (bass) In Greek mythology, Furies were ferocious godlike female avengers who would swoop down on mortals and destroy them. In this band, the difference is that instead of destruction, inspiration occurs. Darol Anger and the Furies is a new group put together especially for this decade, comprised of a phenomenal all-star array of talented feminine presences, plus two notorious tricksters. Darol Anger is a unique fiddle guru, who spent three decades reinventing American string music to encompass his explorations of bluegrass, jazz, and all other music. The groups that he founded or co-founded include the David Grisman Quintet, the Turtle Island String Quartet, Psychograss, Montreux, and the Republic of Strings ensemble. His playing and composition overflow with passion, prodigious technique, and generous humor. He has spent his career enlightening and inspiring his fellow musicians, and vice-versa. Living in the Boston area, Darol has been a mentor to some of the most exciting and phenomenal young musicians in the world. These powerful presences are brought into synchronization and orbit around Anger’s vision and that unmistakable violin voice. The result is mythical, magical, musical mayhem. Emy Phelps is a standout artist in a large field, a prolific songwriter with a riveting voice which plumbs the deepest emotions. A musician of note in the Pacific Northwest, she has made a 30 year music career while raising 3 sons and one daughter, achieving degrees in Theatre Arts and Special Education. … Read More »

The Onlies are Sami Braman (fiddle, vocals, guitar), Riley Calcagno, and Leo Shannon (both of whom sing and play fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo). When a young band is recommended by the likes of Darol Anger, Brittany Haas, Tristan Clairridge and Kristin Andreassen (notloBBers all), one listens...and responds...and books. All three are only children (hence 'The Onlies") and are juniors at Seattle'sGarfield High School. They will be traveling to the Boston and Amherst areas to look at colleges during spring break. We understand they are top-notch musicians; they're also charming, witty, and fun before audiences large and small. They've played gigs up and down the West Coast, and have been featured performers at Northwest Folklife, the Berkeley Oldtime Music Convention, and the The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. notloB gives you once again the opportunity to be able to say "I saw them when." Admission by free-will offering, $5-10+ suggested. Reservations througheventbrite.com NotloB Music presents... The Onlies Friday, April 17, 2015.
