On Saturday, April 12th at 7:30 p.m. the Blue Moon Coffeehouse features the progressive bluegrass band, Cricket Tell the Weather performing as part of their CD release tour. Winners of the highly competitive 2013 FreshGrass Festival Band Contest, Cricket Tell the Weather is a five-piece indie string band featuring bluegrass-inspired original music. Strongly influenced by American traditional music, Cricket also includes rock, pop, and jazz elements, contributing to the growing genre of progressive bluegrass. Award-winning songwriters Andrea Asprelli (fiddle) and Jason Borisoff (guitar) received a blue ribbon in 2011 at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival Songwriting Competition for their co-written song “Remington”. They are joined by Manhattan-based Doug Goldstein on the banjo, Dan Tressler on mandolin from Easton, CT, and Jeff Picker from Portland, OR. The band is excited to be featured at Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, Del Fest, Ossipee Valley Music Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Brandywine Folk Festival, and FreshGrass Festival. Between sets by Cricket Tell the Weather, there will be an open mic.

Roland White is coming to town - he'll be giving a three-hour mandolin workshop and concert in Brookline on May 10 - Saturday afternoon, 11am to 2pm. He'll be appearing with guitarist Diane Bouska. At 2pm they've give a short concert as part of the day's activities. If you haven't been in one of Roland's workshops yet, he's a great teacher - and the real thing, when it comes to passing on bluegrass traditions. Cost is $60 for BBU members, $70 for non-members.
