SUMMARY:Larry and Joe
DESCRIPTION:Larry Bellorín hails from Monagas\, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe\, after a decade in South America\, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry works construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus\, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants. \nCurrently based in the Triangle of North Carolina\, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, maracas\, guitar\, upright bass\, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce.

SUMMARY:Lonesome Ace Stringband
DESCRIPTION:Masters of their trade\, The Lonesome Ace Stringband bring grit\, skill and abandon to Americana music\, bridging old-time\, bluegrass and folk traditions into a seamless hybrid of original material that is at once fresh and timeless. \nInstrumentation alone sets this Toronto-based trio’s sound apart: consisting simply of fiddle (John Showman)\, clawhammer banjo (Chris Coole)\, and upright bass (Max Heineman). The spine-tingling harmonies and interchanging lead vocals only bring more magic to the equation. They’ve become festival favourites at Rockygrass\, Celtic Connections\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, Merlefest and regularly tour the USA\, UK\, Germany and\, of course\, Canada. \nWith more than a decade of group music-making under their belts\, they’re releasing their fifth album\, a feisty and mighty collection of all-original material titled ‘Try To Make It Fly’ (October 13\, 2023).

SUMMARY:Hot Club of Cowtown at The Bull Run
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Austin\, Texas-based Hot Club of Cowtown may be the world’s most globe-trotting\, effervescent string trio\, who’s joyful sound blends the traditional Western swing of the 1940s American southwest with European hot jazz influences of the same era. \n2024 marks three decades since guitarist Whit Smith and violinist Elana James met through a classified ad in the music section of New York City’s legendary alternative newspaper\, the Village Voice. A few years later Jake Irwin was added as Bass player and Hot Club of Cowtown was born. And thirty years on\, they continue to surprise and delight with their trademark “arsenal full of technique and joy\,” Jon Caramanica\, New York Times. \nThey have perfected a truly unique and infectious hybrid that playfully blurs musical boundaries\, conjuring the spirit of both Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys and jazz legend Django Reinhardt.

SUMMARY:Michael Cleveland at Groton Hill
DESCRIPTION:From an early age\, Michael Cleveland heard old-time and bluegrass music at local jams and festivals near his hometown of Henryville\, Indiana. His grandparents hosted regular bluegrass gatherings at the American Legion\, and at age four\, he began playing the fiddle. He attended the Kentucky School for the Blind in Louisville\, where he learned the Suzuki method of violin. While he practiced the violin at school\, he played fiddle at home. \nCleveland had always dreamed of leading his own band and in 2006\, he formed Flamekeeper\, seven-time recipients of the IBMA’s “Instrumental Group of the Year” award\, including Josh Richards\, Nathan Livers\, Jasiah Shrode\, and Chris Douglas. In addition to touring with his band\, Cleveland has performed with a legendary list of bluegrass greats: Bela Fleck\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Billy Strings\, Vince Gill\, and more. Widely considered the bluegrass fiddler of his generation\, Cleveland has been recognized 12 times as the IBMA’s Fiddle Player of the Year and in 2018 was inducted into the National Fiddlers Hall of Fame. \nHis recording Fiddler’s Dream was nominated in 2018 for a GRAMMY for Best Bluegrass Album\, and in 2019\, he won a GRAMMY for his album Tall Fiddler. The same year\, Cleveland’s amazing life of adversity and achievement was featured in the documentary film Flamekeeper: The Michael Cleveland Story. And in 2022\, he was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellowship.

SUMMARY:Eugene Tyler Band at Lizard Lounge
DESCRIPTION:Eugene Tyler Band with Cannon Rogers and lighthearted live at the Lizard Lounge Oct 23rd.\n\n\nEvent is 21+ \n$15/$18 door \nDoors at 7 \nIndie-bluegrass trio Eugene Tyler Band is\, at their core\, a road band\, who’ve spent years cutting their teeth on the bluegrass festival circuit and clubs across the northeast. Their newest record\, Low It Goes\, captures the free-wheeling intensity of those live shows and showcases the cathartic\, irreverent songwriting that has won them fans all over the country. As songwriter Eugene Gardner says\, “You learn a lot about yourself as a band when you’re playing 3 hours a night\, and it’s forced us to step up our game in a way that I’m really proud of.” Sharing stages with bands like Billy Strings\, the Kitchen Dwellers\, Driftwood\, and the Mountain Grass Unit\, ETB has carved out a unique voice in the bluegrass scene\, with cutting\, often humorous songs\, and a fast & loose approach that calls back to influences like the Clash and Drive-By Truckers.

SUMMARY:Bluegrass Music Through the Years with The Splinters
DESCRIPTION:The program surveys bluegrass music from its roots in early country and fiddle/banjo music\nto more progressive acoustic music with the same instrumentation. The Splinters cover old time fiddle tunes and The Carter Family to Bill Monroe\, Flatt and Scruggs\, The Stanley Brothers\, and other traditional bands\, landing in more progressive groups such as David Grisman\, Bela Fleck\, and modern ‘old time’ like John Hartford and Andrew Marlin. Participants will learn about these different styles of music and what makes them unique\, but part of the same fabric. We will also discuss the role of each instrument in the group and how that creates the whole sound you experience. There will be plenty of music involved. \n\n\n\nThe Splinters\, a bluegrass and old-time string band from Massachusetts\, deliver a relentless groove to accompany their tight 3-part harmonies. Tom Pritchard (fiddle) brings the heat to his fiddle playing. J Johnson (mandolin) adds a jazzy flair to his breaks. Chris Reckling (guitar\, banjo) picks solid rhythm and punchy leads on top of Garrett Wallace’s grooving bass fiddle. A Splinters set veers from straight ahead bluegrass to traditional fiddle tunes and back\, with the occasional detour into a modern song. They released their first album as a quartet\, “Grey Owl”. Their second album\, “In the Pale Moonlight“\, was released in August\, 2023. Both are available on all major streaming platforms and on Bandcamp.
